A Little About Me
My name is Mick Kling and I am a practicing optometrist from San Diego, California. I have had the great fortune to live and work over the last 25 years in the greatest city in America with some of the finest eye doctors in the country. After graduating from Southern College of Optometry in 1993 and completing a residency at Omega Eye Care Center in Jackson, TN a year later, I packed my bags and moved west. I started my professional career working for a large ophthalmology practice, then soon after, along with several colleagues, started a laser center where we began performing LASIK and PRK for our patients with a local surgeon. In 2002, we sold the company to TLC Laser Eye Centers (TLC - La Jolla) where I became one of the clinical directors.
How I Got Here
In 1999, I purchased my first practice and ran it as a side gig as we built the laser center. My heart wasn’t really into it, but I enjoyed the experience of building my chops at practice management and trying something new. In 2006, I made the decision to purchase a second practice and leave the laser business altogether. Since then, I have acquired 3 additional practices (5 in total) and have parlayed them into a one of the largest single location practices in San Diego. I now own one of the most unique and innovative practices in the country. In fact, in 2017, Invision Magazine recognized our office as “America’s Finest Optical Retailer”. To this day, I continue to be intimately involved in the day to day operations of the practice, and still enjoy the challenges of running the business.
Not long ago, it became clear to me that all of this growth had only resulted in more stress, anxiety and frustration. As the practice grew, so did the expenses and anxiety that came along with managing the cash flow. What I thought would result in more financial freedom actually led to sleepless nights, a strained bank account and a growing resentment toward my decision to own my own practice. As I chased the top line growth of my business, things in my professional life only became more and more complicated and stressful. While the ego was well fed, I was starving for financial peace of mind.
That’s when I figured it out! That’s when I stumbled upon a breakthrough that changed my perspective and attitude toward my practice. I have since found complete peace and satisfaction with running my practice. No more sleepless nights worrying about the bank account. No more stress about making payroll. I now know where every penny goes each month and have been enjoying unbelievable profitability in my practice, and I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned with you.
What I Do
I love numbers. I love spreadsheets, looking at Profit and Loss Statements, Balance Sheets and studying the cash flow of not only my own practice, but of other doctor's practices also. And I enjoy helping other doctors understand what’s going on with the finances in their practice.
Over the last several years, I have had the opportunity to speak and teach others what I have learned about money. I’m not a CPA or accountant. I don’t have a finance degree or an MBA. But what I do have is a knack for understanding the finances of optometry practices. I’ve also recognized the need to develop a straight-forward, systematic approach to managing cash flow, getting practices out of debt, and aggressively eradicating expenses to maximize profitability. And that's where The Profitable Doctor Money Management System comes in. I look forward to teaching you everything I've learned about running a profitable and fulfilling practice.
If this resonates with you, I would love to schedule some time to discuss the needs of your practice and see if The Profitable Doctor is right for you.
